The first moments of 1 January 2017 found us praying in our church in Déva !!! On this beautiful day , The main feast of The Blessed Virgin, Mother of God and we prayed that nobody is ever left orphaned in every sense of the word!!

I greet  all  of my beloved brethren with the official text from our Church  in the new year,

Our God , You who, presented the world , by the virgin birth of Mary with eternal salvation. Please let us be aware of the intercession of the Mother of God , as we received Your Son, the One who obtained life for us through Her. Who lives and reigns with You in unity with the Holy Spirit , one God for ever and ever Amen. 

Sunday 1 January 2017   New Year’s Day. 

Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.

The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.

When they saw this, they made known the message  that had been told them about this child.

All who heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.

And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.

Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Luke 2, 16-21

As a priest  I did not gild one altar not even a statue, I did not build a stone church for my Creator, but I know that I also played a part in God bending down towards the children  through these nice young people .

The children in Déva are preparing happily and with optimism for the New Year ! May God give us all the same hope, joy and trust in Him

The essence of love is not that I love you the way I see it fit, but I have to love you, as you expect it from me. Whatever makes the other one really happy , often is not the same thing that makes me happy.

.".This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many..” On Christmas Eve because of Mary’s “yes” God became man !! During every holy mass based on the “yes” of the people gathered with their priest the bread and wine becomes God in the form of the Holy Eucharist!! In truth every single church is like the cave in Bethlehem , every holy mass Christmas Eve, every altar the manger in Bethlehem, in front of which following the example of the shepherds , the wisemen we can also fall on our knees , to greet the same One who on Christmas Eve became man , our Lord Jesus Christ !!

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), 24and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon;* this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.* 27Guided by the Spirit, Simeon* came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28Simeon* took him in his arms and praised God, saying, 

‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant* in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,  a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’

And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34Then Simeon* blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

Christmas can be a feast, celebration for all of us. We are not celebrating an event from the past b, but eternal life , the meeting with the eternal God. We can all be shepherds , wise men of the Orient and your home will become the cave in Bethlehem , with the Life in it, if you open your heart towards our lord Jesus Christ .

If in our everyday earthly life, we did something wrong , and feel sorrow because we are scared of  being called to account , from punishment or miss out on a reward - this type of remorse is not really remorse as it is based on selfishness. However if I  observe , look at God , seeing His great goodness I am genuinely sorry for missing out  on love , goodness. This type of suffering cleanses one. There is no purification, cleansing without suffering! That thought strikes me the most that neither God nor my fellow man deserved this from me , in whose suffering He also takes His share.

I believe that on the night of Christmas or in the stillness of their  shelter in Nazareth the Blessed Virgin and Saint Joseph did experience the fulness of human existence , peace , joy. They did not have the luxuries offered by our world , the “wonders" of  electric , chrome , plastic but they were there for one another , the God-given gift , blessing. They did not consume however they became a gift.

I like to picture infant of me the quiet, simple cave in Bethlehem , with the Holy Family in there with the Christ Child. What an astounding simplicity ! The Lord of the Universe comes with empty hands into this world ! He does not bring anything  because He Himself is the blessing , the gift. “16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3,16
